Our Story

Why Kulan
Exists

Kulan Institute of Learning was founded with a simple but powerful idea: language should never be a barrier to learning technology.

As a member of the Somali community in Columbus, Ohio, I saw firsthand how talented, motivated people were being left behind in the tech revolution — not because they lacked ability, but because every resource, course, and certification was in a language that was not their first.

So I built Kulan. Not just another online school, but a bilingual learning home where students can grow in both English and Somali at the same time — absorbing concepts in the language they think in, while building the English vocabulary they need to succeed in tech careers.

Every course, every material, every lesson is built with this community in mind. That will never change.

How We Got Here

From an idea to a live platform — the story of how Kulan came to be.

Early 2025 — The Idea
The Problem Becomes Clear

Studying for my CompTIA Security+ certification, I kept noticing the same gap — every resource was English-only. I started keeping notes in both languages for myself, and realized this was something the whole community needed.

Mid 2025 — First Build
Kulan Institute Takes Shape

Built the first version of the website — a simple bilingual HTML site with an enrollment form. Created the first course materials for AI for Beginners in both English and Somali.

Late 2025 — Platform Launch
Full LMS Goes Live

Launched the full learning management system with student accounts, course viewer, admin panel, and teacher portal. Migrated from Netlify Identity to Supabase for real authentication and database storage.

March 2026 — Growing
Three Sites, Three Subdomains

Expanded to three live subdomains — the marketing site, the LMS, and the community hub. Now building certificates, an application page, and more course content across AI, Cybersecurity, and Digital Literacy.

Building the Future

More courses in business, civic literacy, and digital skills. Growing the instructor team. Adding paid courses to sustain the free tier. Building the platform our community deserves.

Right now Kulan is one person with a vision — but the community makes it much more than that.

Mohamud Mohamed
Founder, Instructor & Developer

Mohamud is the founder and sole developer of Kulan Institute of Learning. He holds a BA in Business Administration and an Associate's degree in Management Information Systems, and is actively pursuing a career in cybersecurity while building Kulan alongside it.

He created Kulan to solve a problem he lived — the lack of bilingual tech education for the Somali community. He builds every course, writes every line of code, and teaches every class himself. His goal is to grow the platform into a full team of bilingual instructors from within the community.
